Feilden Fowles is deeply invested in the UK cultural sector, and has a proven record of collaborating with leading national galleries, museums and visitor centres. Some of our most recognised and awarded work has been with institutions such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Natural History Museum and the National Railway Museum. Although highly diverse, these projects are united by our context-led approach, honest materiality and the spatial richness of the visitor experience.

As architects, we are interested in the relationship between learning behaviours and learning environments. We relish the opportunity to work with education institutions of all types and scales, from pre-school through to university. Our approach is collaborative and learner-led, resulting in inspiring and innovative spaces and buildings that meet the specific student needs and pedagogical approaches of the institution. Our work on university and school projects such as Homerton College Dining Hall in Cambridge and our phased masterplan for Ralph Allen School in Bath has won the practice numerous awards.

From cathedrals to World Heritage Sites, Feilden Fowles has extensive experience of working on heritage projects, historic sites, and listed buildings of all grades. We listen to the past while looking to the future, combining sensitivity and imagination to sustainably transform places, buildings and lives. Our approach is informed by history; our work often draws on traditional building methods, typologies and materials, while sensitively integrating modern technologies and techniques where appropriate.

Having designed our own studio, we have a deep understanding of the relationship between our surroundings and our work. Design impacts numerous facets of working life, in often highly nuanced ways. Individual wellbeing, team productivity, company culture and brand expression are all influenced by the arrangement, materials and aesthetics of space. Rooted in a consultation process that ensures and enhances wellbeing, Feilden Fowles engages meaningfully and directly with client businesses to design commercial buildings and workspaces that are reflective of a company’s working culture, inspiring to their teams and true to their identity.

Residential design has been a part of Feilden Fowles’ practice since our first project – the Welsh longhouse Ty Pren. We work with forms and materials that respect and resonate with their environment, so the homes we create are imbued with a sense of belonging. From individual houses to large-scale student-accommodation schemes, our residential projects encompass feasibility studies and masterplanning as well as design and construction.

Feilden Fowles’s approach to masterplanning and strategy is collaborative, holistic and rooted in community. We work at all scales, from individual estates to city-scale developments, enjoy collaborating with wider teams, and are experienced in optimising complex sites. Alongside the functional requirements of the project and the logistics of the building’s position, we consider the long-term social and environmental impact of every site we shape. Whether it’s a school masterplan like Ralph Allen School in Bath, a historic institution such as Mansfield College, Oxford, or a large-scale commercial development, the result is a robust scheme with a strong identity and lasting sense of place.
